Vitamin C for menopausal skin is one of the most useful actives to understand if traditional L-ascorbic acid serums have never agreed with you. Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, often shortened to THD ascorbate or THDA, is a lipid-soluble ester of vitamin C. It is built to solve the two things that make classic vitamin C serums so hard to love: instability and irritation, delivering the same brightening and antioxidant benefits in a form that suits thinner, more reactive, menopausal skin.

Why menopausal and perimenopausal skin changes

Vitamin C is one of the actives most directly tied to how firm and even-toned skin looks. As estrogen declines through perimenopause and menopause, skin's structural support already looks less firm, and its own antioxidant reserves — vitamin C among them — become depleted faster under everyday UV and pollution exposure. At the same time, the barrier is thinner and more reactive, which is exactly when the very low pH (below 3.5) that pure L-ascorbic acid needs to stay stable and effective starts to sting rather than help. THDA was developed to sidestep that trade-off, delivering vitamin C's benefits without requiring an acidic, often irritating formulation.

What THDA does for menopausal skin

  • Self-regenerating with Vitamin E: vitamin C and vitamin E recycle one another in the skin's antioxidant network, which is why Philogeni pairs THDA with Tocopherol rather than using it alone. Together with CoQ10, this forms a self-renewing antioxidant network that helps skin look brighter, firmer and more resilient.

THDA vs L-ascorbic acid: what the research shows

THDA is an L-ascorbic acid precursor: once it penetrates the stratum corneum, it is converted intracellularly to active ascorbic acid by the skin's own esterase enzymes, which is what allows it to confer vitamin C's benefits despite starting as a different molecule. A double-blind, randomised controlled trial in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (Afzal et al., 2024) followed 44 participants using either 5% THDA alone or 5% THDA paired with a stabilising antioxidant for 8 weeks, and found THDA alone measurably improved the look of pigment intensity, with the paired version improving it further. A mechanistic study (Swindell et al., 2021) found that THDA on its own can degrade under the skin's oxidative environment, and performs more reliably when paired with a stabilising antioxidant — exactly the reasoning behind formulating it alongside Vitamin E rather than in isolation. A separate open-label study (Min et al., 2024) reported visible improvement in the appearance of photoaging and uneven pigmentation over the course of treatment.
