Rosemary for menopausal skin plays a role you might not expect. Beyond the familiar Mediterranean herb sits one of nature's most effective antioxidant extracts, and in a Philogeni formula rosemary works much as vitamin E does: it helps keep the precious oils fresh while lending its own antioxidant defence to the skin, with a whisper of clean, herbal freshness.

Why an antioxidant herb belongs in an oil

Anhydrous, oil-rich skincare depends on the freshness of its lipids, and antioxidants are what protect them from oxidising over time. Rosemary leaf is rich in naturally protective compounds, chiefly carnosic and rosmarinic acids, which is why it has long been used to help preserve oils, in the kitchen and in the lab alike. Ours is extracted using CO2, a clean, solvent-free method that uses pressurised carbon dioxide rather than chemical solvents to draw out and concentrate those antioxidant compounds. In our Bio-Lipid Concentrate it helps guard the blend of desert and seed oils, so they stay as fresh on your shelf as the day they were bottled.

What rosemary does in the formula

  • Protects the oils: a natural antioxidant that helps slow oxidation of the blend.
  • Antioxidant defence for skin: its plant antioxidants help defend against environmental stress.
  • A clean herbal note: lends a subtle, fresh botanical character.
  • Plant-based preservation: part of how we keep formulas fresh without synthetic additives.

Where it comes from

Rosemary is one of the most generous and sustainable botanicals we could choose, a hardy Mediterranean shrub grown abundantly the world over, thriving on poor soil and little water. Reaching for a humble, plentiful herb to do a job beautifully, rather than something rare, is exactly our formulating philosophy: the right ingredient for the role, sourced kindly. Extracting it with CO2 rather than solvents keeps that choice clean from field to bottle.

A note on evidence

Rosemary extract is widely recognised in cosmetic science as an effective natural antioxidant, which is the role it plays here. We describe it on that basis, as a plant antioxidant that protects the formula and supports the skin's defence against environmental stress, rather than making clinical claims.

Common questions

What does rosemary do in skincare?
Rosemary extract is a natural antioxidant. It helps protect oil-rich formulas from oxidation and adds its own antioxidant defence for the skin.

Will it smell strongly of rosemary?
No. At the level used it lends only a subtle, clean herbal freshness rather than a dominant scent.

What is a CO2 extract?
It is an extract made using pressurised carbon dioxide instead of chemical solvents, a clean method that gently concentrates the plant's antioxidant compounds. It is different from rosemary essential oil.
