Chemical structure — Cordyceps
The complex's link to the energy story CoQ10 begins. Cordyceps carries cordycepin and adenosine — nucleoside analogues studied for their part in cellular energy signalling.
Species matters more here than anywhere else in the formula. Commercial "Cordyceps sinensis" is almost always cultivated Cordyceps militaris or the CS-4 mycelial strain; the wild fungus is among the most expensive biological materials on earth and is not in a skincare bottle. We name what is actually in ours.
Mechanism
Cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) and adenosine interact with adenosine-receptor signalling in vitro. The extract also adds polysaccharides to the complex's humectant load.
Evidence
In vitro and preclinical. There is no topical human evidence for the microcirculation and oxygen-delivery claims that currently run on the welcome page.

MaitakeGrifola frondosa (Mushroom) Extract 1.25%
Chemical structure — Maitake
The third quarter of the complex, contributing grifolan-type beta-glucans to the same surface hydration the others build.
Maitake is the member of the complex with the least topical literature behind it. It earns its place as part of a dosed group rather than as a headline actor, and the copy says so rather than reaching for a claim the research has not made.
Mechanism
Grifolan beta-1,3-glucans: humectant and film-forming at the stratum corneum, alongside the other three extracts.

In vitro only. The elasticity and hydration claims currently attached to maitake on the welcome page are not supported by published human topical trials.

ChagaInonotus obliquus (Mushroom) Extract 1.25%
Chemical structure — Chaga
The antioxidant density of the complex. Chaga concentrates polyphenols, melanin and birch-derived triterpenes, and sits at the top of the fungal antioxidant assays.
Chaga grows on birch and takes the tree's betulin with it. Its antioxidants work in a different phase and on different radicals than the vitamin C and E pair, which is the argument for having all three rather than doubling down on one.
Mechanism
Polyphenols, melanin complexes and triterpenoids donate electrons to reactive oxygen species generated by UV and pollution exposure.
Evidence
In vitro antioxidant assays (ORAC, DPPH) are strong and consistent across the literature. Topical human data is absent, so the claim here stops at antioxidant capacity.

ReishiGanoderma lucidum (Mushroom) Extract 1.25%
Chemical structure — Reishi
One quarter of the 5% mushroom complex, and the quarter carrying the most beta-glucan — the polysaccharide that holds water at the surface of the skin.
The four mushrooms are dosed at 1.25% each, which is how the complex reaches 5% without any one of them being fairy-dusted. Reishi does most of the humectant work in that group; the other three are here for what they add around it.
Mechanism
Beta-1,3/1,6-glucans are large, highly hydrophilic polysaccharides. They bind water in the stratum corneum and form a film that slows transepidermal water loss.
Evidence
In vitro and ex vivo. The hydration and film-forming behaviour of beta-glucans is well described; controlled human trials of topical Ganoderma extract are not available. Described here as hydration, which is what the evidence supports.
Sourcing
Dual-extracted fruiting body. The supplier CoA should carry a beta-glucan assay rather than a total-polysaccharide number — the second one counts starch.
CoQ10Ubiquinone 1.0%
A mitochondrial coenzyme the skin makes less of each decade. In the epidermis it does two jobs at once: it carries electrons, and it holds the lipid phase against oxidation.
Q10 levels in skin fall with age, and topical application has been shown to raise what is measurable at the surface. It is also why the packaging matters as much as the formula: ubiquinone is light- and oxygen-sensitive, and a clear bottle spends the dose before the customer does.
Mechanism
Carries electrons in the mitochondrial respiratory chain; in its reduced form, ubiquinol, it scavenges lipid radicals within membranes.
Evidence
Human: topical Q10 formulations raised skin Q10 levels and reduced markers of oxidative stress in vivo (Knott et al., BioFactors, 2015). Appearance endpoints are reported in smaller studies over longer durations.

Vitamin ETocopherol 1.0%
The barrier's own antioxidant, put back. Tocopherol is the primary lipid-phase antioxidant in human skin, and it runs down fastest exactly where the oil is thinnest.
Vitamin E and vitamin C are here as a pair rather than as two entries on a list: tocopherol quenches lipid radicals and is oxidised doing it, and ascorbate regenerates it back to its active form. That partnership is the reason both are dosed. It also keeps the formula's own oils from turning — one ingredient doing two jobs.
Mechanism
A chain-breaking antioxidant in the lipid phase: it donates a hydrogen atom to lipid peroxyl radicals and terminates the peroxidation chain in barrier lipids, then is regenerated by ascorbate.
Evidence
Topical vitamins C and E in combination gave greater UV photoprotection than either alone (Lin et al., Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2003). The pairing is better evidenced than either molecule's solo cosmetic claim, which is how it should be described.

Vitamin CTetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate 2.0%
The oil-soluble form of vitamin C. L-ascorbic acid needs a low-pH water phase and begins oxidising the day the bottle is opened; THDA sits stably in an anhydrous oil and stays that way.
Esterifying ascorbic acid with four fatty-acid chains makes it lipophilic, so it travels the same lipid route through the stratum corneum as the rest of the formula, and skin esterases cleave it back to ascorbic acid once it arrives. At 2.0% it is the largest single active in the bottle — and the reason an anhydrous oil can carry a vitamin C claim at all.
Mechanism
A lipid-soluble ascorbyl ester. Cutaneous esterases cleave the palmitate chains, releasing L-ascorbic acid in the epidermis, where it works as an antioxidant and as a cofactor for the hydroxylases involved in collagen synthesis.
Evidence
In vitro and ex vivo penetration work supports cleavage to free ascorbic acid in skin. Human clinical data on THDA specifically is thin — the well-known vitamin C trials use L-ascorbic acid, a different molecule with a different delivery problem.
BakuchiolPsoralea corylifolia 0.5%
A plant meroterpene that behaves like a retinoid without being one. It is the entry point into the retinol conversation for skin that cannot take retinol's first six weeks.
Bakuchiol is isolated from the seed of Psoralea corylifolia, used in Ayurvedic practice long before gene-expression work described its retinol-like signature. It is photostable, so it can sit in a morning formula — retinol cannot. We dose it at the concentration used in the trial that put it beside retinol, rather than at a number that reads better on a label than it behaves on a face.
Mechanism
Gene-expression profiling in human skin models shows bakuchiol upregulating a retinoid-like transcript set, including type I, III and IV collagen, without binding the retinoic acid receptor itself.
Evidence
Human: a 12-week randomised, double-blind trial of 0.5% bakuchiol against 0.5% retinol found comparable improvement in wrinkle surface area and pigmentation, with significantly less scaling and stinging in the bakuchiol arm (Dhaliwal et al., British Journal of Dermatology, 2019).
